Bariatric (weight loss) surgery

  • Bariatric surgery is also known as weight loss surgery. These are surgical techniques mainly involving the stomach causing early satiety or decrease in the absorption of nutrition  or both, ultimately leading to weight loss

  • Bariatric surgeries are usually done when diet, exercise  and drugs fail to achieve the required weight loss or in patients with severe obesity associated  with serious health condition

  • Medical therapy for severe obesity has limited short-term success with negligible long-term success and also long term weight loss of severely obese patient by dietary modifications alone is less than 3%

  • Until very recently, obesity was not recognised as a disease. The American Medical Association officially recognised obesity as a disease in 2013

  • World wide, 28 lakhs people die every year due to overweight or obesity

  • India has the highest obese population in the world followed by China

  • Obesity leads to increased risk of many serious health conditions such as ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, blood pressure and cancers like breast, colon, gallbladder, endometrium, kidney cancers etc. 

  • According to a study, obese patients who undergo bariatric surgery will have 29% reduction in mortality compared to those who do not undergo surgery

  • A 25-year-old morbidly obese male patient has 12 years less life expectancy  or 22% reduction in life expectancy compared with a normal-sized male

What is BMI?

  • BMI - Body Mass Index

  • Obesity is classified according to BMI

BMI = Weight in Kgs / Height in meter 2

For  eg.-  an adult male with weight - 110 kgs and height - 1.7 meters

BMI = 110 / 1.7 x 1.7

BMI = 38.1 

Obesity classification (Based on BMI)

        BMI                Classification

  • <18.5            - Under Nutrition

  • 18.5 - 24.9   -  Normal weight

  • 25 - 29.9      - Over Weight (Pre Obese)

  • 30 - 34.9      - Obesity Class 1

  • 35 - 39.9      - Obesity Class 2 (Severe Obesity)

  • >/=  40.        - Obesity Class 3 (Morbid Obesity)

  • > / = 50        - Super Obesity

When should I undergo Bariatric Surgery ?

Indications of Bariatric surgery

  • BMI > / = 40

  • BMI > / = 35 with presence of 1 or more co-morbidities

    • (Type II diabetes (T2DM), Hypertension, Sleep apnea , non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, lipid abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders and heart disease)
