The liver is a solid gastrointestinal organ weighing around 1.5 kgs, situated in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen largely under the rib cage. So, normal liver is not palpable. It is reddish-brown in colour and feels rubbery to touch
-
The liver has right and left lobes. Gallbladder is situated under the liver
-
Unlike other organs, liver has dual blood supply (Portal vein & Hepatic artery)
-
Liver blood flow represents about 25% of the cardiac output
-
Liver blood flow is decreased during exercise and increased after ingestion of food
-
Liver filters the portal blood coming from the digestive tract before reaching the heart and rest of the body
-
The liver is the only visceral organ that can regenerate
Major functions of the liver
-
Bile production and excretion - helps in digestion and absorption of fats & fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E & K)
-
Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs
-
Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
-
Storage of glycogen, vitamins (A,D,E,K & B12), and minerals (iron, copper)
-
Synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors (2,7,9 &10)

Blood detoxification and purification
